If you have pre-existing medical conditions, many insurers will automatically exclude them if they haven’t been referred to their underwriters in advance and terms agreed.

Many people are taking medication, or might be waiting for an operation or even a simple diagnostic investigation, but don’t even think about the effect this might have on their holiday travel insurance policy. Any medication taken, and any existing health concerns or symptoms, whether diagnosed or not, must be disclosed to your insurer, or you could invalidate your insurance cover!

Travel insurance - Pre Existing medical conditions NOT excluded.

We now have access to a product which is ideal for people with pre-existing medical conditions, which will not exclude cover, even for your existing medical conditions, provided you have the consent of your doctor to travel.

Instead of applying medical exclusions to the policy, or loading your premium to ridiculous levels, this product (underwritten by Axa Insurance and arranged by Global Travel Insurance Services Ltd) simply applies a higher excess to any claims relating to your medical conditions. The excess will range from £500 to £3,000 depending on your age and to where you are travelling.

Example 1: Skiing in France

medical insurance approved

A 45 year old, with a history of high blood pressure which he controls with medication, had a mild heart attack 2 years ago, with no ongoing ill effects

Approved, increased excess for related conditions of £500

Example 2: Cruise

An 82 year old is booking a 3 week cruise to multiple

European destinations. She had a hip replacement and

has a long history of asthma, controlled with an inhaler.

Her Doctor is happy for her to travel

Approved, increased excess for related

conditions of £1,500

The above cases are e xamples only – terms achieved subject to individual circumstances.

Important Note

Provided you have not been diagnosed or have received hospital treatment for your medical condition within the last 12 months, there is no need to disclose your medical condition on application, as these conditions will be covered by the policy, subject to an increased excess.

Please ensure you read the policy wording carefully before proceeding with cover.

Variable ncreased excesses apply for travellers with pre-existing medical conditions, and if you are travelling to America or the carribean, you must telephone the insurer before travelling to confirm whether cover can be provided for your trip.

Due to the nature of the quotation system, the product above is sold on a non advised basis. This means that it is your responsibility to ensure that the product meets your needs before proceeding with cover. If you wish to speak to one or our experts for advice, please telephone us.

Do I have to have a higher excess?

.

If your pre-existing medical condition has been diagnosed over 12 months ago and is stable, or kept under control with medication, we may be able to negotiate to include your condition on a travel insurance policy without an increased excess.

What information will I need to provide?
Basically, we need enough information to be able to present a full picture to potential insurers. Although this will vary depending on your own circumstances, you should have the following information ready to save time when you call:

Name of condition
Date of diagnosis
Medical treatment received in hospital
History of any hospital admittances
Medication prescribed (including dosage) and details including dates if your medication or dosage has been changed in the last 12 months.

High blood pressure / cholestoral? Please provide the dates and readings of your last two blood pressure / cholestoral measurements.
Medical certificate from GP/Specialist for older people – If you are over 80, it might be required that a medical certificate is obtained from your health professional consenting to your planned trip.

Annual Travel Insurance for people with medical conditions
We can even offer annual policies for people with medical conditions, so that you only need to go through the details once. If you do have a list of information to go through each time you take out a travel insurance policy, why not consider an annual policy?

This will provide peace of mind and freedom in the knowledge that you can go away for a weekend, a week, or longer, without the need to arrange travel insurance in advance of each trip. All you need to do is simply ensure you keep us up to date with any changes in your condition or medication, so that the insurers can offer renewal terms which fit your situation.
